Description

In a Flash

The rare historical and cultural treasure that is the Mayor’s Mansion in Pelion, once the local Mayor’s residence, was initially built in 1859.  The inscription on the marble mantelpiece over the entrance, intact to this day, gives the date away. It was brought back to life, restored and redesigned fully in 1991, while respectfully preserving all its astonishing historic and cultural features.

Being the end result of belief in, and admiration of, traditional architecture, the Pelion Mansion is in fact considered to be an excellent example of a renovated museum. It truly speaks to individuals who appreciate quality, culture and aesthetics. Various esteemed guests from across the globe including several ambassadors and politicians, world-renowned scientists, famous artists and intellectuals have enjoyed its unique hospitality and have immersed themselves in the Mansion’s authentic charm.

The Mayor’s Mansion has a large capacity, a spacious yard boasting uninterrupted breath-taking views of the surrounding pristine mountainous landscape and forest, over the town of Volos, the Pagasitic Gulf and the Aegean Sea beyond. It also boasts a variety of spaces of various sizes, both indoors and outdoors.

As a result, it is an ideal choice for one large or several families travelling together and large groups of friends. It is also a fantastic choice for organising cultural, social and business events and meetings, including weddings and other group activities like ( e.g. yoga retreats and more).

The Mayor’s Mansion offers a unique opportunity to experience Greek elegance and grace, in its 1860s form. A truly remarkable historical treasure for you to appreciate and enjoy.

Interior

The interior of the Mayor’s Mansion is just as, if not more impressive than its exterior. Prospective guests should rather refer to the pictures presented in order to get an overall sense of the charm and elegance radiating from the interior spaces of the Mansion. Its unique character and idiosyncratic nature can hardly be described by common words.

The architect in charge of the renovation, Maria Diamond, was highly passionate about traditional architecture, having specialised in the renovation/preservation of historical buildings. She went to great lengths in order to preserve and restore the original style and character of the building’s interior and exterior, while adding the necessary modern amenities.

The interior style is unlike any stereotypical ‘shoebox’ commercial hotel experience. All the necessary amenities are in place, though all authentic features have been painstakingly preserved. The positioning of the double beds at the corner of the room as people historically placed them. The small bathrooms which were added to the building despite the static and architectural challenges. The wooden staircases and the short built doors, just as the Mayor once built them 160 years ago.

The Mayor’s Mansion includes 5 double bedrooms with twin beds, 2 suites and 1 large studio. The independent, more recently built 60sqm studio is the largest bedroom in the building. It comes with its own fireplace, large bathroom and kitchenette. It is a superb living space for two, though it can accommodate up to 5 people.

The communal interior spaces include a reception, a living room with a fireplace, a dining room, an ‘interior balcony’, a dining room, 3 lounges (back lounge, front lounge and the ‘Ouzeri’ lounge – a space typically designed as a local/traditional bistro).

Exterior

The original building was restored with ample respect for its authentic features, traditional character and the surrounding landscape. The outdoor spaces are therefore as charming and breath-taking as the interior. The area is renowned for its architectural and natural beauty. Therefore, the experience of sitting outdoors will certainly preserve the feeling that you have been transported to a ‘different time’.

Several sitting areas, in the garden as well as on the veranda, are available to you. You could enjoy your breakfast, lunch and dinner, or a glass of wine while admiring the surrounding landscape. You will certainly feel in awe looking at this exceptional building and its stone paved outdoor garden areas on one side, and the blue sea across the Gulf and town of Volos beneath, on the other.

You could enjoy walks in the nearby village and along the mountain paths. The area is of extreme natural beauty and has been pristinely preserved.  You can also just sit back and enjoy the unique surrounding mountainous and forested landscape that engulfs the Mansion, and the blue horizon where the sky meets the sea beyond. The character and setup of the mansion, is all part of the restorer’s grand design to offer you an authentic experience beyond the ordinary in Pelion.

The mansion is a unique opportunity for you to enjoy a short journey back to the era when the region of Makrinitsa and Pelion peaked financially, culturally and artistically – while taking in the fantastic views, wild nature and superb gastronomy that the area has to offer.
